This 1971 Surtees TS8 was built to replace the Len Terry designed TS5-TS5A. It was the first all new Surtees to be designed and built in house.
Former Motorcycle World Champion Mike Hailwood was signed to drive TS8 – 05 the works car in the Rothmans European F5000 Championship in 1971. Reliability issues hampered Hailwoods title aspirations in the early races. With a change of engine from Morand to Alan Smith the reliability returned and Hailwood went on to finish second in the points to Frank Gardners works Lola.
For 1972 chassis number 05 was used in an early Rothmans European F5000 Championship round by Herve Bayard before being fitted with a Cosworth DFV and campaigned in the European Hillclimb Championship finishing 2nd. Bayard entered the Rothmans 50,000 race at Brands Hatch in August 1972 with the car in Formula One spec.
Since fitted back with a 5 Litre Chevrolet engine which has been hardly used since being refreshed by EDA (465bhp). Minimal use since gearbox rebuild by Tony Wilson. Complete with numerous spares. Bag tanks were replaced in 2009. It will require up to date crack testing before use.
